I have a Dy-Dee Baby from the 1950s -- all vinyl head and body, with molded hair, sleep eyes, 21" tall. She is jointed at hips and shoulders with a joint
type that allows all limbs to move 360 degrees. My son tugged hard on her leg trying to pull her from behind a place she was stuck and he pulled one leg right
off. Unlike later Effanbee dolls, this is not a simple "cuff" joint. Instead on the body portion of the joint, there is a thick, rubbery
"post" sticking out of the center of her otherwise vinyl hip socket. The leg contains a round disk of the same rubbery substance. Currently the disk
is rattling around inside the leg, but the disk has a hole in the center where it obviously once was seated on the "post" protruding from the hip.
The disk is too large to come easily out of the hole at the top of the leg. So my question is: what is the best way to reattach the leg?
IF I can warm the vinyl a little, and thread a ribbon through the hole, I might be able to force the disk out. If I could reattach the disk to the post (based on my research, I could do this using either Liquid Nails or the Vinyl Cove adhesive used to bond vinyl in construction applications), do you think I could get the disk back into the leg again?
If not, is there anything inside this doll's body to which I could attach an elastic, if I substituted a S-hook assembly made for stringing doll limbs in the place of this disk/post? (Obviously, usually all the limbs would be attached to each other this way, so I don't know whether only one leg could be put in this way.)
I really want to repair this doll, as she was mine as a child, and my own daughter (not quite 3 years old) really wants to play with her -- but she looks a little macabre with only one leg.
Any advice you can offer would be most appreciated!
